Controversy Continues over Bee Colony Collapses

Postby Shadowgirlau » Wed Apr 11, 2012 7:57 am

Yes the controversy continues over why these colonies continue to collapse and whether or not we ourselves are responsible due to our use of some of the most popular pesticides on the market. Wouldn't be at all surprised myself. The link initially loads quite quickly although takes a minute after wards to complete.

I have a cousin who lives in Sydney. She's got a very small garden but does a lot with it, her husband builts vertical food gardens... anyway she's got a hive of native bees, they don't sting and give good honey just not the big amounts of the honey bees. But the native bees are better pollinators, I'm thinking about getting a hive or two for the honey, couldn't normal bees as DH is allergic to stings.

Something to think about?

Sounds like a plan Vicki,

I've toyed with the idea of taking an apiarist course and keeping a hive myself. Thinking about it is as far as I have gone with it of course.

Looking into this now myself, as I have given up work and we are trying to diversify the farm into lots of little income earners to support, have a local guy up our way is making hive boxes. Haven't contacted him yet.

You must be enjoying being at home now a days Jo, congrats with the change. Would be interested in more information regarding the hive boxes when you know more yourself.

Cheers

Good news Jo,

I bet you're totally enjoying being at home. :D

We have different people around doing honey, it's a nice income apparently.

Look forward to hearing how you go.

Cheers,

Vicki

Hi Jo,
After a long absence from the site I've come in for a gander to see what is happening and reading the old posts I wander how you got on with the hive? Find out anything of interest?
